Why geothermal

One system, all four seasons.

A few feet down, the ground holds a steady temperature all year. Geothermal uses that instead of fighting a 20 below air temperature. Here is what that means in practice.

📈 Very low operating cost

Moving heat takes far less energy than making it. That gap shows up on the bill every month of a Minnesota winter.

Heats and cools

The same loop that pulls heat out of the ground in January pushes heat back into it in July. No separate AC condenser sitting outside.

Built to last

The indoor equipment typically runs 20 to 25 years, and the buried ground loop is generally rated for 50 or more.

🔊 Quiet, with nothing outdoors

No outdoor unit means no compressor noise on the patio and nothing to shovel out or damage with the mower.

🏠 Pairs with in-floor heat

Geothermal and in-floor radiant work particularly well together, and we install both.

The Northern Services team in Olivia, MN
Why Northern for geothermal

A specialty, not a sideline.

Geothermal is on our list of specialties.

Along with radiant heat and boilers. This is not a one-off job for our crew.

We size the loop to your ground.

Loop design depends on your soil, your lot and your actual heating load. That is site work, not a catalog number.

We service what we install.

The same Olivia based crew is here in ten years when it needs attention.

Straight payback math.

Geothermal costs more up front. We show you the real numbers so you can decide, rather than talking you into it.

How it works

Ground loop, heat pump, your whole house.

A buried loop exchanges heat with the ground. Indoor equipment does the rest.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does geothermal cost?

More up front than a furnace and less to run every month after that. The honest answer depends on your loop design, your heating load and your site, which is what the free in-home assessment is for. We’ll show you the payback math rather than a slogan.

Are there rebates or tax credits?

Incentives change from year to year, and some federal residential credits have changed recently, so we will not quote you a number on a web page. Ask us during the assessment and we’ll tell you exactly what is available at that moment through your utility or electric co-op.

How much yard does a loop field need?

It depends on whether we go horizontal or vertical. A horizontal loop needs open ground, a vertical loop uses boreholes and needs far less surface area. Plenty of Renville County properties suit one or the other, and we’ll tell you which on site.

Will it heat my house at 20 below?

Yes. The ground a few feet down stays roughly the same temperature all winter regardless of the air temperature, which is exactly why geothermal suits this climate. Systems are sized for our design conditions, not a mild average.

Does it cool in the summer too?

Yes. The cycle reverses and moves heat from your house back into the ground, so one system covers both seasons with no outdoor condenser.

What areas do you cover?

Olivia and all of Renville County, plus surrounding towns including Hutchinson, Willmar, Litchfield and Redwood Falls. If you are nearby and not listed, call and ask.
